Have you ever spent days or even weeks without getting enough sleep? If yes, then you know how important sleep is.
Whereas some may not have difficulties feeling sleepy and spending a good number of sleep hours per night, their sleeping positions may be jeopardizing their quality of sleep and their general health at large.
Sleeping positions can be as diverse as we are all diverse and unique. This is because everybody has his or her favorite position that makes them fall asleep comfortably.
However, your dearly loved and comfortable sleeping position may be deadly if not reinforced to derive total benefits of quality sleep.
Personally, I find myself shifting to all four major sleeping positions before the night is over.
Side sleepers for example may be advised to sleep on their right side instead of sleeping on their left side.
Why is this so?
The heart needs enough room to function properly and to pump blood to the whole body efficiently.
By habitually sleeping on the left side, the heart may fail to function properly and lead to more complications with time.
On the other hand, sleeping on the side is the only sleeping position that has been found to be friendly to the spine. While sleeping on the side, the spine remains in its natural state where it is not strained at all.
This explains why I always feel comfortable while sleeping on the side albeit for some hours.
While sleeping on the side, your head is way too far from the mattress unlike while sleeping on your back or stomach.
For that reason, it is paramount to ensure that your head remains in a straight line just like the rest of your body.
To achieve this, I use side sleeper pillows to ensure that my head does not bend which can lead to neck muscles and tendons strains.
